Maria, the founder of ChitaFit was born and raised in Waterloo, Iowa and has always enjoyed an active life. In 2008, Maria relocated to the Washington, DC area for a career opportunity and has been living in the area since then. About six years ago, Maria left her stressful job and even more stressful work environment to take control of her health. 30 pounds overweight, she was very uncomfortable in her skin. It was not until she heard the First Lady, Michele Obama talk about living a healthy lifestyle that she became inspired and determined to make a change. The First Lady spoke so eloquently about putting yourself first and finding the time to be active. It was just what Maria needed to hear to kick start her journey.
Soon after committing to being more active, Maria developed a love for running and spinning. This love eventually pushed her to train for and participate in a sprint triathlon, multiple 5k races, a half marathon, and a full marathon. Though her love for running was cut short by an unexpected discovery of thin cartilage in her knees, she didn’t giving up. Maria delved deeper into her love for cycling.
After spinning for about five years, Maria decided to take her passion for spinning to the next level by getting certified and creating ChitaFit. Since becoming certified through Maddog Spinning Company in January 2013, Maria has had the opportunity to learn and teach fundamental spinning techniques and principles under the mentorship of some pretty well-known spin instructors throughout the DMV.
With good music, high energy, and an encouraging approach, Maria’s spin classes keep people of all fitness levels coming back for more.
When she’s not teaching spin, Maria enjoys dancing, water sports and volunteering in the community with DC Family Youth & Initiative (DCFYI) and the N Street Village homeless shelter for women.
